The Grand Rivers Tourism Commission was created and established in January of 2000 under Mayor Frank Buchanon. The Ordinance establishing operations of the Commission were passed by the Grand Rivers City Council in 2000 with amendments in 2001, 2003, and 2008.
The Grand Rivers Tourism Commission is a branch of the Grand Rivers City Government that is governed by the Grand Rivers Tourism Commission Board Of Directors. The Commission has one employee, Director of Tourism, that is hired and managed by the Board of Directors. The Tourism Director establishes, maintains, and implement practices to fulfill the mission of the Grand Rivers Tourism Commission as directed by the board.
The Tourism Commission is funded through taxes collected by restaurant and lodging establishments. The transient tax of three-percent (3%) is collected by all lodging and over-night rental facilities within the city limits of Grand Rivers. Restaurants within the city limits collect a one-percent (1%) food and beverage tax on dining sales. Tax collecting entities remit the tax collected no later than the thirtieth day (30th) of the month proceeding collection. Taxes collected remitted after the thirtieth day (30th) for the previous month are subject to a 10% penalty plus 6% interest as outlined in the 2001 amendment of the original ordinance. Tax collected is remitted to city hall by the 30th monthly along with the appropriate Tax Return Form.
